Today saw the reintroduction of exit checks on individuals leaving the UK. Initially scrapped in the 1990’s, the Home Office has been without any meaningful way of monitoring or controlling the number of individuals that overstay their visas. The exit checks are intended to help combat illegal immigration.
The exit checks will be phased in. For the first month all passports will be scanned but only 25% of the passport holders will have their details verified to ensure they are genuine. It is hoped that this will minimise disruption to travellers.
Thereafter there will be a move to 50% verification and by the middle of June 100% verification will be introduced.
We would expect significant delays for travellers leaving the UK as the process is ironed out. We recommend arriving early at your departure port to complete the additional administrative checks.
