Spouse visa requirements

The requirements for a spouse visa are you:

  • need to be over 18 years old
  • are married to someone who is a British citizen, holds ILR or either settled or pre-settled status through the EUSS
  • intend to live permanently in the UK with your spouse
  • are in a genuine relationship
  • meet an English language requirement at a minimum level of A1 unless exempt
  • can comply with the minimum financial income requirement of £29,000 for new entrants or £18,600 for those on this route pre-11 April 2024
  • have suitable accommodation

A spouse visa enables you to:

  • live and work in the UK
  • work as an employee or through self-employment
  • leads to settlement status after 5 years
  • places you on a path to becoming a British national.
