British Citizenship

The requirements to naturalise as a British citizen are you:

  • must hold indefinite leave to remain or settled status
  • be over 18 years old
  • satisfy a ‘good character’ requirement
  • meet the residence requirements of not being outside of the UK for 450 days over the past 5 years, or 270 days in the past 3 years if married or in a civil partnership with a British citizen 
  • not have been absent from the UK for more than 90 days in the previous 12 months
  • comply with the Knowledge of Life in the UK requirements
  • have an intention to live in the UK, unless married or in a civil partnership with a British citizen.

Once naturalised as a British citizen you can:

  • apply for a British passport
  • vote in the UK
  • travel into the UK restriction free
  • sponsor dependants
