In a boost for employers in the healthcare sector facing significant recruitment challenges over the past 18 months, the Home Office following a previous announcement, has today laid down changes to the Immigration Rules to enable Care Workers to be sponsored through the Skilled Worker route and be included in the Shortage Occupation List (SOL) from 15 February 2022, subject to parliamentary approval. The Home Office has stated this will ‘alleviate current pressures on the health and social care system as a result of COVID-19’ following the impact of the ending of ‘free movement’.

The skill threshold for the role can be lower than NVQ level 3 - a significant step which will enable employers to recruit from a wider pool and help to ease recruitment issues.

Furthermore, for jobs in the SOL, the minimum salary only needs to be the higher of:

  • £20,480 per year or
  • £10.10 per hour.

All health care jobs will require a criminal records check.

Employers will need to hold a sponsor licence to sponsor healthcare workers through the Skilled Worker route.
